An Intense Polyculture
Food Forest and Nursery
The Food Forest at KWWF is a site of ongoing experimentation and growth, an intense polyculture of native and non-native trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, annuals and “weeds”. The plant nursery will supply plant seedlings for the food forest at KWWF, NEO Earth Restoration projects and more.
we began with swales
In the spring of 2019 we dug the first swales for our Food Forest, also known as a Forest Garden, on a site that had been prepared by six hogs that
had worked the soil the previous year.
fruts, nuts and more
We planted it with an assortment of fruit and nut trees and shrubs, such as hazelnuts, black currant,
gooseberries, Cornelian Cherry and American Plum, and support plants like comfrey, sunchokes, senna, and many more.
wandering is encouraged
As the plantings develop, community members will be able to wander through harvesting food, medicine, herbs and flowers while learning about native and beneficial plants, and enjoying the many birds, insects and amphibians that are drawn to this flourishing micro-ecosystem.
